Symptoms of Gum Disease
Learn the signs that can indicate gum disease and how early detection and regular check-ups are key to oral health in this educational video by Dr. Vahid Bashi.
Detecting gum problems is crucial for maintaining oral health, and there are several signs you can look out for:
1. Bleeding Gums: As you brush, floss, or even when you spit after brushing, if you notice any blood, it can be a sign of gum issues. Healthy gums should not bleed during routine oral hygiene.
2. Gum Appearance: Healthy gums typically have a pinkish color and appear relatively flat around the teeth. If your gums look swollen, red, or inflamed, it may indicate gum disease or other problems.
3. Regular Dental Check-ups: Regular dental check-ups, ideally every six months, provide an opportunity for a dental professional to thoroughly assess your oral health. They can identify any underlying gum problems that might not be obvious to you, as gum disease can develop gradually without causing pain.
It’s important to note that gum disease can progress without causing pain, and your body may adapt to the problem, making it less noticeable. However, untreated gum disease can lead to severe issues, including bone loss and tooth loss. Therefore, maintaining a regular schedule of dental cleanings and check-ups is essential for early detection and prompt treatment of gum problems, ensuring the long-term health of your teeth and gums.
