How Is Gum Disease Treated?
In the following video, Vahid Bashi, DDS, discusses how periodontal disease treatment varies, plus our customized plans aimed at improving oral health.
The treatment and management of periodontal disease, commonly referred to as gum disease, vary based on the condition’s severity. In its less severe stages, routine dental cleanings at intervals of a few months may effectively manage the disease. However, as the condition worsens, more comprehensive treatments become necessary. Among these treatments is deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, which involves the meticulous removal of plaque and tartar buildup beneath the gum line and the smoothing of root surfaces to prevent further bacterial accumulation.
For advanced cases of periodontal disease, surgical options may be considered. These procedures can include gum surgery to lessen the depth of periodontal pockets, thereby facilitating easier cleaning of these areas, or bone grafting to restore bone that has been lost around the teeth. Treatment plans are customized to meet the unique needs of each patient, with the goal of stopping the disease’s progression and improving overall oral health.
