Does Dental Implant Surgery Hurt?
Concerned about implant surgery pain? Dr. Vahid Bashi ensures a comfortable experience with minimal discomfort, using advanced techniques for a surprisingly easy process.
Many of my patients express concern about whether receiving an implant is painful. Given that an implant resembles a metal screw, it’s understandable to feel apprehensive about the procedure. However, the experience is far less daunting than it appears. We ensure you are fully numbed before the procedure begins, so you won’t feel any discomfort during the surgery. It’s important to note that the jawbone, where the implant is placed, is quite different from your teeth. Teeth are highly sensitive to temperature, pressure, and other stimuli due to their extensive nerve innervation. The jawbone, on the other hand, does not have as much nerve supply, making procedures on the bone less sensitive than those on the teeth.
Despite the initial fears, most patients are surprised during the implant surgery. They often don’t realize the implants have been placed until I inform them that the procedure is complete, sometimes after inserting six or eight implants, to which they react with surprise at the speed and ease of the process.
For cases where teeth have been previously removed and the area has healed, the procedure involves minimal bleeding. This is because I use a small pilot drill to create a precise opening in the gum for the implant, leading to a straightforward and clean insertion. Post-surgery, there’s typically no need for stitches, and the healing process is significantly accelerated compared to other dental procedures. Although I provide pain medication, many patients find they only need it for the first day or night, reporting only slight soreness thereafter.
The apprehension surrounding dental implant surgery is understandable, but the reality is that advancements in techniques and anesthesia make it a relatively comfortable experience with minimal post-operative discomfort.
